Problem
This project was quite unique. Unlike any other projects that I have worked on:
It had no written / documented specification and requirements.
The company has manufactured over 30+ types of printers and they all looked different with the exception of 4 printers.
All stakeholders were in a different locations.
Opportunity
How can we build a modern graphic user interface thats easy to use ?
Design process
Workshop: The first step for me was to request for an in-person workshop to meet with stakeholders (Project managers, Product owners, Engineers, Scientists and Industrial Designers) to get briefed on the project and start gathering requirements.
Interview: Interviewed our internal printer operators that have experience with all the printer types to understand the pros and cons of the existing printers UI
White boarding: We had numerous amounts of both an in person and virtual white boarding session.
Design Iteration: The initial designs went through many iterations before landing on a final design.
Usability test
I conducted usability tests with our internal printer operators, application engineers and selected customers to solicit feedback and improve on designs.
Final design proposal
Outcome
The style guide and approach has been approved to be the foundation for future printers.
Designs were implemented and the printer launched in 2024
